End of summer, think aeration!

School is about to start soon, the summer is ending, and your back to your daily routine.  So what does this mean for your lawn?  Time to start thinking about an aeration!

What is an aeration?  Aerating pokes holes into your ground allowing oxygen and nutrients to your grass roots.  Aerating also helps decompact your soil, allowing the grass roots to expand and grow healthier.

Why do you need one?  Try this: take a sponge and hold it as tight as you can in your hand.  Hold your hand under your faucet for a few seconds, then remove your hand from the water.  Open your hand and see how much water was absorbed into the sponge.  Not much, right?  Think of this as really hard soil choking your grass roots.  When the roots can’t expand, your lawn will begin to die off.

How often should you do this?  Every year in the fall is an easy way to remember.  Along with aerating, seed should be applied to give your lawn a thicker look and fill in any bare spots.  Over the winter, some of your lawn will die off or new stems won’t regrow (this is called thatch).  To keep your lawn healthy and thick, you’ll want to spread new seed.
