It’s a cold winter January day today, so I figured why not get some “summer thoughts” going and think about warmer beach weather! Ocean City has been a favorite vacation spot in Maryland for years. We all know about the amazing miles of beaches and nightlife, great restaurants and seafood, but what are the things the locals know about or do? There is a lot more to do if you can only take so much relaxing on the beach! Here are a few places that we like to visit.

Assateague Island: Only about 15 or 20 minutes away from Ocean City, MD is this small island packed with outdoor activities to do. From Rt 50, take Rt 611 and follow it to the end (you’ll go over a bridge onto Assateague Island).

Assateague Island is broken up into 2 parts- the State Park and Federal Park. If your looking for more outdoor activities, the Federal Park will be more for you. There are sections for beach camping, RV camping, walking trails, clamming, crabbing, a kayak rental and tour shop as well as an OSV (Over Sand Vehicle) section to drive your 4×4 onto the beach. A separate pass is required for the OSV portion and can be purchased inside the visitors center. Assateague Island is also home to about 100 wild horses! During most days you can see them roaming around in the dunes, the bay grass or even on the beach. Local tip: If you decide to get an OSV pass, the OSV section is limited to 145 vehicles. Check OSVcount.com (not affiliated with Assateague Island) because others will report the current count to see if you will be able to drive on prior to starting your journey to get there.

Fishing: Ocean City is jammed packed with great fishing. It’s also known as The White Marlin Capital Of The World! Seriously, it is! Google it! A fishing license is required to fish in and around Ocean City, but there are a few places where a license is not required. You can fish for free at 4th St and the bay side (behind the skate park) and on 9th St and the bay side. If you are looking to strap on your “sea legs”, Bahia Marina on 22nd St has small boats you can rent at very affordable prices, also pontoon boats if you’d like to take the family along with you. Looking for a guide service? No Problem! West Ocean City’s Ocean City Fishing Center is home to a whole bunch of charter boats. Whether your looking for inshore or offshore, they have it all. If you are looking for excellent surf fishing, Assateague Island OSV is one of the best spots. Just be sure to buy the OSV pass and proper fishing license, the beach is heavily patrolled by Rangers. Local tip: if you are visiting in the winter and have the itch to go fishing, Capt. Monty Hawkins on the Morning Star does year round offshore trips to wrecks. Click here for the link to his website.

Snow Hill/Berlin: Just 25 minutes from Ocean City is Snow Hill, the capital of Worcester County Maryland. It’s a small quiet town (about 2,000 residents) and is situated on the Pocomoke River. The Pocomoke River Canoe Company offers canoe and kayak rentals as well as SUP’s so you can cruise the river and relax. The Pocomoke river is very quiet and peaceful which is sometimes much needed after a long night in Ocean City! Take a picnic lunch and hang out on the river or at Byrd Park. Berlin, voted America’s coolest small town in 2014, is also a short trip outside of Ocean City- about a 10 minute drive. Berlin thrives on the ‘shop local’ experience. There are plenty of shops and amazing restaurants for a quick trip if your coming back from Snow Hill. Grab a drink and “people watch” at the historic Atlantic Hotel or shop local boutiques. Our personal favorite hang out is Burley Oak Brewing Company (a must do for any beer lover). They have many craft beers on tap and are always putting out a new selection to keep you wanting to try more. Local tip: Be sure to get a flight of beer at Burley Oak so you can sample a few of their awesome beers.

I hope this guide helps and offers different ideas while you visit Ocean City. If you have any questions or can’t find answers to specific things, we would love to help you! Just email jay@themowingpros.com and I’ll be happy to help as much as I can.
